Drug and Alcohol Awareness in the Workplace

The use and supply of prohibited drugs in the workplace has dramatically increased.

Controlled drugs and alcohol abuse are particularly prevalent in areas of industry where outdoor work, isolation, boredom, physical and mental stress feature. However, the problems are now increasingly commonplace in other areas including office environments.

Research has revealed that management rarely has adequate knowledge and awareness of drug and alcohol abuse and the associated risks; this is reflected in many instances of these issues not being properly addressed within companies Health & Safety policies. Companies also fail to take adequate or proper steps once a problem has been discovered, sometimes they do not know how to deal with it or even how extensive the problem is.

Vicarious liability is a particular issue in this area. UK employers have a legal duty of care under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure the workplace is safe and without risk to health.

The principle aims of the course are:

  • To increase knowledge and awareness of controlled drugs and alcohol, the effects and how to recognise users’ symptoms
  • How to recognise controlled drugs and what to do when finding drugs or evidence of their use
  • Awareness of drug and alcohol prevention measures

Linx International has been consulted by the UK Government’s Health & Safety Executive to contribute in the drafting of national guidelines on drug & alcohol prevention in the workplace.
